When I first arrived in Dallas, in 2013, and began trying to make sense of the city, I found it utterly confounding, a place of seemingly endless enigmas and contradictions. This flew in the face of its reputation as a city of arch superficiality, of sleek surfaces with little behind them. To truly know Dallas, I soon gathered, meant looking behind its real and metaphorical mirror-glass facades, surfaces that obscure as much as they reflect.
